The biodynamic agriculture and sustainability
Podere Borgaruccio is certified organic since 2010 but the biodynamic agriculture works on a different level.
Biodynamic farming involves a philosophy, a way of life, a way to observe and work the land. Its purpose is to help nature to get an increasingly fertile land, and produce healthy foods that feed mankind and its spirit.
The principles of biodynamic agriculture were first enunciated by Rudolf Steiner, founder of Anthroposophy, back in the 20s, during a seminar for farmers where the central topic was the health of the Earth, its maintenance and increasing fertility to improve food quality.
The practical advice given by Steiner show the way towards a wider knowledge of the living and its manifestations and in many ways resembles an exciting mix of ecology, ethics and esoteric mystery.
For example the Anthroposophy considers the farm as a real living organism in which each element (Earth, plants, herbs, water, minerals, animals, and humans) is in equilibrium with each other and with the cosmos.
This thought, in the 20 's was a precursor of much more recent concepts. In addition, Steiner had clearly indicated the importance for farmers to regain their rightful role of interpreter of the land, in place of many independent consultants victims and spokesman of the industrial chemical industries.
A model of sustainable agriculture
In this sense, the biodynamic farming is a model for sustainable agriculture because, not only does not make any use of chemicals, but has the goal to transform the farm into a self-sustaining biological entity, able to produce everything the farm needs.
